What does a crane operator do?
A crane operator is someone who uses a crane to transport various objects. There are many different types, makes, models and sizes of cranes, such as mobile cranes, tower cranes, boom trucks and self-erect tower cranes.
How much does a mobile crane operator make?
In 2017, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that the average, annual crane operator salary was $55,690. Experienced crane operators that are working on large-scale projects may make as much as $84,290. Most experience is gained at a construction site.
Are Crane Operators in demand?
Crane Operators are in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, crane operator jobs are expected to grow 8% from 2014 to 2024. This is slightly above the national average for the universal job market, but well above the national average for highly skilled jobs.
How do you become a heavy crane operator?
Career Requirements
- Step 1: Earn a High School Diploma. Nearly all heavy equipment operating jobs require a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Step 2: Complete Heavy Equipment Training. There are three ways to become a heavy equipment operator.
You can complete a union apprenticeship, a state apprenticeship, or go to a technical school. - Step 3: Earn License and/or Certification.
Do crane operators need to be certified?
There are many states that require the certification of crane operators before they can commence work. Most states also require crane operators, particularly mobile crane operators, to have a license.
How long does it take to become a mobile crane operator?
In order to get the certification, you need to undergo a training course. The training usually lasts for 4 to 8 weeks, some last for several months depending on the type of crane you want to get certification for.
The initial training is your initial step. You still have to go through rigorous apprenticeship training that usually lasts about 1 to 4 years, though you will be paid for doing the apprenticeship training.
How much does it cost to become a crane operator?
Many schools offer complete courses ranging from $1,500 to $2500, depending on the type of crane you want to get certified in.
For The Crane Operator certification program testing, average prices for the written test fee is $165 and the computer test is $205, while the practical exam fee for this type of crane is $60, if you are taking 2 crane types, the practical testing fee is $70.
